Coinciding with the transition to Workday, staff job titles will soon change as part of the Job Family Architecture project, which will group similar WVU staff positions to simplify and standardize how positions are categorized at WVU.
Learn more about the Job Family Architecture project in today’s bimonthly update from the WVU Compensation team:
The new Job Family Architecture uses several layers in a framework to categorize a job. The first two components of this framework are job families and job functions.
Job families are a collection of jobs involving similar types of work and requiring similar training, skills, knowledge, and expertise. This is the most general layer of the Job Family Architecture framework.
Job functions are the next layer, housed within a job family and more specialized in nature.
To date, we have created 19 job families, each containing multiple job functions.
For example, the Finance job family includes the following job functions:
- Accounting
- Budget and financial analysis
- Financial support
- Payroll
- Accounts payable
- Procurement
- Real estate
- Tax
- Treasury
Job families and job functions are the first two pieces of the Job Family Architecture framework. When combined with job categories and job levels, which we will discuss in later communications, a job is formed.
The new architecture groups jobs based on the type of work they do and the level of the position. Job families and job functions organize each role based on the work that they do, not the unit or college that they work in. Because of this, most units and colleges will have jobs that span a variety of job families and job functions.
You can view all job families and job functions on the Job Family Architecture website. This site also houses in-depth information about the project, provides definitions for commonly used project terms, explains career pathing, and answers FAQs.
This new architecture will create more consistent job titles, provide more clarity about where staff positions fit into the broader WVU organization, and better align titles with market standards.
Staff job title changes will coincide with the transition to Workday. Compensation, job duties, and reporting lines will not change as a result of this project. Additionally, faculty, student worker, and graduate assistant titles will not change as part of the project. This is strictly a title change for staff members.
If you have any questions, please email the Compensation team at compensation@mail.wvu.edu. As part of our responsibilities, our team develops and maintains the classification structure of WVU job titles.
We are committed to making this a smooth process and ensuring that all employees feel informed as we approach the implementation of Workday.
